THE COURSE
The course gives students the opportunity of hands on experience to include feeding, watering, cleaning out and handling of horses. The courses are run in partnership with the Welsh College of Horticulture but all training and assessing is carried out at Bradnant Equestrian Centre.
NVQ Level 1This course is ideal for people who wish to gain or improve their knowledge in horse care. Little equine knowledge is required but you must show commitment to the course and be keen to study horses.
This course provides a good grounding in horse care and covers the following subjects:
- Assist with the care of horses
- Assist with the cleaning of the stables and yard
- Assist with putting on, taking off and cleaning equipment
- Assist with handling of horses
- Maintain health, safety and good working relations
Please note: Any riding as part-of or in addition to NVQ Level 1 will be charged separately.
NVQ Level 2At NVQ Level 2, you will cover the following units:
Mandatory units
- Prepare and clean stables
- Maintain the health and well being of horses
- Prepare horses for use
- Prepare and maintain horses on grazing land
- Prepare and provide non-ridden exercise and aftercare
- Load and unload horses under supervision
- Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
- Maintain effective working relationships
The optional unit run will be at the discretion of Bradnant Equestrian Centre and will be chosen from:
- Assist with reproduction, parturition care and young stock
- Exercise horses under supervision
- Ride schooled horses under supervision
- Drive horses under supervision
- Assist with leading a trek
- Assist with the specialist care of performance horses
- Assist riders with special needs
Please note: Any riding as part-of or in addition to NVQ Level 2 will be charged separately.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTSStudents must be 16 years old or over and there are no formal entry requirements. A basic knowledge of horses and commitment to the course are required.
Please note, whilst NVQ Level 1 does not require you to ride a horse, NVQ Level 2 requires you to be able to ride a quiet horse at balance in all paces and be capable of jumping small jumps. Riding lessons to achieve this level can be provided at Bradnant EC.
HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED?NVQ Level 1 and 2 are available either over one year full-time or two years part-time.
FINANCIAL SUPPORTOnce offered a place on the course you will be provided with a compulsory equipment list. In order to comply with Health and Safety requirements, the specified clothing must be worn.
